The Big Equalizer

El terremoto que sacudió el centro de México el 19 de septiembre de 2017 provocó terribles reminiscencias de la destrucción provocada por el temblor que sacudió la capital del país en 1985. The Big Equalizer, pabellón de México en la Bienal de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de Seúl de 2019, explora el profundo cambio de percepción que sufrimos cuando nos sometemos al terror que provoca la imprevisibilidad de un terremoto.

La instalación invita a la reflexión sobre cómo habitar un espacio vital común, cuando la relación entre nuestro cuerpo y el entorno construido se ve alterada. La propuesta sonora examina el instinto básico de supervivencia, para concienciar sobre lo que se entiende colectivamente por seguridad: agacharse junto al sofá, refugiarse bajo la mesa o ponerse bajo el marco de la puerta escuchando, mientras los audios reverberan los sonidos del riesgo colectivo.

The earthquake that hit central Mexico on September 19th, 2017, summoned terrifying flashbacks of the massive destruction wrought by the most deadly earthquake of the country's capital in 1985. The Big Equalizer, Mexico's pavilion at the 2019 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, explores the profound shift in perception we undergo when we subject ourselves to the terror caused by the unpredictability of an earthquake.

The installation invites reflection on how to live in a common living space, when the relationship between our body and the built environment is disturbed. The sound proposal examines the basic instinct of survival, to raise awareness about what is collectively understood as safety: crouching by the sofa, sheltering under the table or standing under the door frame listening, while the audios reverberate the sounds of collective risk.
